Brief History Of The Club

The early years saw Stony Stratford playing in the local leagues against such teams as St. James, St. Peters and Bletchley.  During this time a local Council Meeting was held to discuss

“Was football necessary in the area”, the “ayes” won the day and football progressed.

In Season 1908/09 Stony Stratford won their only Senior County Trophy, the Berks & Bucks Junior Cup.

During the 1920s and 1930s they played in the Bedford League winning Championships and many Charity Cups.  The war years saw little or no football and in fact probably cost our most famous player many England Caps. George Henson played for Wolverhampton Wanderers and Swansea for many years before returning to play for Stony in the late 1940s.

In 1953 the club was reformed to give a format more in line with the trends of time.  During the 1960s and 1970s we were very successful in the South Midlands League as Runners-Up in the Premier Division on two occasions.  After this period our success dwindled and saw us playing in the North Bucks League and Northant’s Combination before re-entering the South Midlands League in 1988.

The Youth Section was formed in 1983 and very quickly became successful in local youth football, winning trophies at all age groups. The U16s won the Berks. & Bucks Minor Cup in 1987/88 and the U18s Youth Cup in 1991/92.

Senior success came once again in season 1994/95 when we became Division One Champions and also the Division One Cup Winners of the South Midlands League to gain promotion to the Senior Division.

During this period extensive improvements were made to the Ground, (Requirements for Promotion) a new Stand was built and railings were put around the pitch culminating in the installation of floodlights.

The floodlights were officially switched on with the visit of Aston Villa (U21s) on the 12th November 1996 before a record crowd of 400.
